NautaDutilh

NautaDutilh is an independent law firm in the Benelux. We are among the largest law firms in Europe, with over 400 lawyers, civil law notaries and tax advisers in offices in Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Luxembourg, New York and Rotterdam.

NautaDutilh goes back a long way. Its roots can be traced to 1724, when Adriaen Schadee founded a firm of civil law notaries in Rotterdam. Many generations of Schadees followed in his footsteps. The first mergers with other notarial firms occurred at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In the meantime, another distinguished family had established a legal dynasty in Amsterdam. Mozes Salomon Asser, the dynasty's founder, set up a legal practice there in 1804. For five generations the Assers remained 'independent', until Carel Daniël Asser joined forces with another Amsterdam lawyer in 1902. During the course of the twentieth century, the Schadee firm – joined by Gerhard Nauta in 1927 – and the Asser firm each participated in a series of mergers, ultimately coming together in 1980 through the formation of Nauta van Haersolte. Ian Dutilh joined the Rotterdam firm Blom en Hijmans van den Bergh in 1940. After World War II the firm merged with several other firms and was named Dutilh, Van der Hoeven & Slager in 1970. At last our current name NautaDutilh was created in 1990 through the merger of Nauta van Haersolte with the firm Dutilh, Van der Hoeven & Slager. NautaDutilh employed the first female lawyer in the Netherlands and has produced entrepreneurs, politicians and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. That says a lot about our mentality. We always look at the law in its political, social and economic context. For centuries this has kept us on our toes and enabled us to stay abreast of the times.

Our mission, as we see it, is to continue our rich history of legal services into an even richer future. We will do this by constantly stimulating each other to be open to new ideas and innovative lines of approach. To be on our guard against falling into routines.
