Aerospace plays a crucial role in the daily lives of everyone on Earth.
Aerospace plays a crucial role in the daily lives of everyone on Earth. Communication, navigation and observation satellites as well as their innovative information systems, terminals and high-tech instruments are becoming a unique part of our planet's infrastructure. TNO works on aerospace technology together with the Dutch government, companies, institutes and universities.
The Space Systems Engineering expert group develops and supplies optomechatronic instruments and systems for aerospace, ground-based astronomy and scientific research. The demands placed on these systems are generally challenging the limits of technology. Creating such instruments therefore calls for a thorough project organisation, in which experts in the fields of optics, mechatronics, manufacturing and testing work together in a multidisciplinary setting to achieve the desired result. The System Engineers are in charge of the technical realisation, which involves processes such as requirements analysis and verification, design trade-offs and budget management. The System Engineers work as members of a core project team together with the Project Manager, the Product Assurance Manager and the MAIT (Manufacturing-Assembly-Integration-Testing) Manager.
Our System Engineers operate within complex projects for developing and creating optomechatronic instruments for aerospace applications. In favour of these projects TNO teams up with National and International partners, sister institutes, subcontractors and clients. Projects are subject to a delivery obligation at a fixed price and generally fall under the European Space Policy driven by ESA, the European Space Agency.
The projects are multidisciplinary and involve TNO specialists in the fields of optics, mechanics, mechatronics and production. Projects range from €500,000 to €5,000,000, and run for several years. The project organisation usually comprises a core team consisting of a Project Manager, System Engineer, Product Assurance Manager and MAIT (Manufacturing-Assembly-Integration-Testing) Manager, supported by a technical team.
The System Engineer is in charge of the technical activities and is responsible for the development, creation and acceptance of the complete technical solution. The System Engineer is the point of contact for our customers when it comes to the technical content of the project. Within the project team, the System Engineer liaises between customer, project manager and specialists. The Systems Engineer knows which resources/tools can be used to streamline the technical processes and has the ability to motivate and inspire the project team. Within the project organisation, the System Engineer reports to the Project Manager.
The System Engineer we seek has at least 5 years of experience as a System Engineer in the field of optomechatronics in a working environment which, in terms of complexity, is in line with that of TNO. Experience in the field of (optical) space instrumentation is a plus.
